The colored Surucua Trogon is a resident of tropical evergreen forest of southeastern Brazil and northeastern Argentina. It has two subspecies, with the Trogon surrucura surrucura having a red belly and a reddish-orange periocular ring; and the Trogon surrucura aurantius, which has an orange belly and a yellow-orange periocular ring. The diet of the Surucua Trogon consists mainly of insects including caterpillars, grasshoppers, spiders, cicadas and flying termites. Surucua Trogons plucking insects from branches in flight as well as by sallying to catch flying insects in mid-air. Migration is not known, and presumably largely or entirely sedentary.
