Sapphire-spangled Emerald (Chionomesa lactea)

The sapphire-spangled emerald is a species of hummingbird in the “emeralds” tribe. This hummingbird is a species that can be found in several countries in South America, including Brazil. The sapphire-spangled emerald is found on forest edges, mountainous regions and gardens in urban areas. They are mostly olive-green above with whitish middle and lower underparts. In favorable lighting, their throats sparkle with violet-blue. The sapphire-spangled emerald forages for nectar at a wide variety of native and introduced flowering plants, shrubs, and trees. The eastern Brazilian sapphire-spangled emerald makes short north-south seasonal movements that are apparently tied to the timing of its flowering nectar sources.
