The pauraque is a nightjar species found throughout Brazil, where there are forests or capoeiras, and also in the extreme south of the United States, Mexico, all of Central and South America. It has two colour morphs, the plumage being variegated greyish-brown or rufous-brown. It is long-tailed and has broad rounded wings. The buff ‘eye-ring’ and ‘facial stripe’ contrast with the reddish sides of the face. It comes out to feed at night, its diet consisting of numerous species of insects, such as beetles, moths, butterflies, bees, wasps, and ants that are captured in short flights into the air from the ground, or in short flights. Some species are threatened with extinction.
