Channel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos vitellinus)

The Channel-billed Toucan is considered the symbolic bird of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The Channel-billed Toucan is the most widespread species of “croaker” found in the Atlantic Forests of southeastern Brazil. The general behavior of this species is typical of large toucans. It forages in the upper levels of humid lowland forests, consuming a varied diet of fruit, large arthropods, and small vertebrates (such as nestlings and eggs of smaller birds, frogs, and roosting bats). Its general color is black, with a yellow throat and breast, and it is distinguished from other toucans by its black beak. It is a great disperser of seeds from various types of palm trees. The preservation of this species is of great interest, as they are among the most peculiar elements of the avifauna of Brazil.
